Coconut What?

Seeing as how I have the misfortune of not only be gluten intolerant but also dairy intolerant, I often use coconut milk as a substitute for cream when I am cooking.  And if you read I Scream, You Scream, you know that I like coconut milk ice cream quite a bit. But coconut water? What? I'd seen it at my local co-op but I'd never really heard anything about it until my former trainer Dillon Martin of dmfitness (from my hometown of Vegas) had posted an update about enjoying the Benefits of Coconut Water.  Forget Vitamin Water! Naturally gluten and dairy-free coconut water is nature's own sports and energy drink! It is full of electrolytes, vitamin c, calcium, magnesium and more potassium than a banana! So I decided to try it, and that.....was a mistake. I AM HOOKED. I make special trips just to get one bottle. Often I have to hit more than one store because they are sold out. I can't even barely afford my new coconut water habit, it is that good.  Now obviously, if you are not a coconut person in the first place, this will not be for you. But I most definitely am. Not only is it delicious but it is completely refreshing, rehydrating and gives me energy after yoga or one of my training sessions.

Now of course I have tried them all (or altleast all the ones available in my area) and I have my favorites, but first things first: DO NOT BUY FLAVORED COCONUT WATER. Not only was it disgustingly sweet, thick and syrupy but it had added sugar on top of the extra sugar content the fruit had! Okay, I've gotten that out of my system. Now for the reviews.

O.N.E. -Just okay and I don't really like the packaging. I found the box awkward and it wouldn't fit in my car's cupholders (it is the little things you know?)

Taste Nirvana - I drink the plain (without pulp) coconut water and it's delicious. Although I like the glass bottle packaging, the serving (a mere 9.5 ounces) is not enough to quench my thirst.

Zico - Fresh, coco-nutty (I know it's not a word) and whopping 14 ounces. The only thing I don't like is where as all the other coconut water ingredient labels read 100% coconut water, Zico's label reads: 100% coconut water from concentrate, natural flavors. Why from concentrate and what natural flavors? I'd like to know.

Nature Factor Organic Coconut Water- The clear winner, not only is it the tastiest but it's the only organic option. And even though it's only .5 more ounces than Taste Nirvana's, it seems far more satisfying. (I could not find a website for Nature Factor so here is a link to Amazon with some information on it.)

And now I'm wishing I had some in the refrigerator. So head to your local grocery store (if you live in Wilmington Harris Teeter, Lovey's and Tidal Creek all carry it) and try some all natural non-allergenic coconut water and tell me what you think!

Helping you stay nutritiously hydrated,

Eat, Drink coconut water and Be Gluten-Free

  1. Interesting! I'm trying going off Dairy this week, and have some coconut milk in the fridge, but had not heard of coconut water. Sounds like a great treat! Thanks for blogging about it.
