I Scream, You Scream

We all scream for ice cream!   If you are as unfortunate in the food allergy department as I am, then you are also dairy intolerant.  This poses a problem for all of us ice cream lovers out there, especially when you crave a pint at 1:00 in the morning.  If you live in Jersey this is not a problem for you.  Wawa (a quick stop like 7-Eleven, Circle K and Scotchman) carries Double Rainbow soy ice cream in not one, not two, but three fabulous dairy free options:  Very Cherry Chip, Cinnamon Caramel and Mint Chocolate Chip. All are obnoxiously rich and delicious. The Very Cherry Chip flavor tastes like Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia, the Cinnamon Caramel flavor like a Cinnabon (oh how I miss Cinnabon) and the Mint Chocolate Chip is made with pure peppermint oil.  However, they are made on shared equipment and not guaranteed gluten-free.  I've never gotten sick from them but I am not a full fledged Celiac.  I have gluten-intolerance only.

For the rest of us there are some fantastic choices that have had the pleasure of melting on my tongue recently.

In fourth place:  Purely Decadent gluten-free, dairy-free Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Coconut Milk ice cream.  That's right.  I said COOKIE DOUGH.  Did any of you ever think you'd eat that ice cream flavor again?  The ice cream itself is not the best I've ever had but it's filled with so many chunks of gluten-free chocolate chip cookie dough, who really cares?

In third place:  Luna and Larry's Coconut Bliss gluten-free, dairy-free Mint Chocolate Chip Coconut Milk ice cream.  Real mint, pure agave instead of sugar, and chocolate.  Light and fresh.  Mint chocolate chip is one of my all time favorite flavors and this one is a winner.

In second place: So Delicious Coconut Almond Minis. Dairy, soy and gluten-free, agave sweetened. Chocolate and almond covered coconut milk ice cream popsicles.  Reminds me of both the almond Klondike bar and what I would imagine a frozen version of the Mallow Cup to taste like.  So Delicious indeed. If it was a character in Grease, it would be Grease Lightening.

And in first place (drum roll please): Rice Divine Carrot Cake gluten-free, dairy free ice cream.  It sounds weird, but it's the best flavor for ice cream since pumpkin in my opinion and Rice Divine has nailed it.  Creamy, delicious and filled with gluten-free carrot cake pieces, what more could a Celiac ask for?  Other delicious Rice Divine flavors include a classic Very Vanilla, the decadent Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge, and Mudd Pie (Blend it with a little soy milk and it tastes like a Jamocha shake from Arby's!)

Try one of these tasty choices and tell me what you think.  Or even better, what kind of ice cream do you scream about?

Givin' ya the scoop,

The Muffin Man

Last week I won a contest. WooHoo! I can't believe it.  Last week Mister Belly, another fabulous gluten-free blog, held a contest to win Udi's gluten-free lemon streusel muffins and I was the lucky duck. Mister Belly promptly sent them via two day air and they were on my doorstep. Now I hate to say it but.....I'm not that much of a lemon baked goods fan.  I like lemons, lemon pepper chicken, lemon drop martinis and lemon meringue pies (which might count as a baked good, but I'm not sure). I don't like lemon cookies, cakes, squares, muffins.....usually.

I am optimistic by nature, however, and was very much looking forward to a warm lemon streusel muffin with my morning coffee the next day.  I opened the package and took out a muffin.....(feels like a muffin)....put it in the toaster oven and waited impatiently.  Then I took a bite.......OH....MY.....GOODNESS!  Lemon...heaven....in my mouth.  Go to the store and get these now!  Even if you're a lemon hater, you will be singing a different show tune.  If the lemon is this good, then imagine how brilliant my favorite flavors will be. OK, writing about this has made me hungry again.  I'm off for another muffin.

Bon Apetit,
